Number of economically inactive in S. Korea hits 2 million in January |

The number of so-called " economically inactive"people in South Korea soared to more than 2 million in January, a report showed Monday.
The number of those who have either chosen not to or given up looking for a job stood at 2.01 million last year, up 143,000, or 7.7 percent, from the previous monthly record of 1.87 million posted in January last year, according to the report by Statistics Korea.
The economically inactive group refers to people who are out of the workplace for more than a week with no particular reasons even if they are not sick or disabled.
Those economically inactive accounted for 4.9 percent of the country's population over the age of 15 in January, the report said.
The number of economically inactive people showed a steady increase after hitting one million in 2004, it said. |
