Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-20 19:46

The direct investment from the European Union (EU) members to Ukraine reached 4 billion U.S. dollars in 2011, up 11.2 percent from a year earlier, according to official figures released on Tuesday.

The State Statistic Service said the cumulative EU investments in the East European country amounted to 39.4 billion dollars since Ukraine got its independence in 1991.

The cumulative direct investment from Cyprus expanded to 12.645 billion dollars from 1991 to 2011, with investment from Germany and the Netherlands grew to 7.386 billion dollars and 4.822 billion dollars respectively, the statistical bureau said.

The increase reflected foreigners' confidence in Ukraine after the country was hit by the 2009-2010 financial crisis.

European investors are encouraged to invest in Ukraine's industry, financial sector, real estate and trade.

The State Statistic Service also said the cumulative Ukraine's investment in the EU amounted to 6.517 billion dollars by the end of 2011.
