Japan says Friday its unemployment rate dropped to a seasonally adjusted 4.5 percent in February from 4.6 percent in January, marking the first improvement in two months, according to official sources.
The number of people employed increased 290,000 to hit 62.88 million month-on-month, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said in a preliminary report.
The jobless rate for men fell to 4.7 percent from 4.9 percent in January and for women to 4.2 percent from an earlier 4.4 percent, according to the report.
Ministry officials attributed the improvement to the backdrop of "a pickup in industrial output amid signs of economic recovery, as well as (more job offers due to) reconstruction work" following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. |
