Japan's supermarket sales in fiscal 2011 ending in March dropped 1.1 percent from the previous year, marking the 15th consecutive contraction.
Total sales stood at 12.78 trillion yen (about 157.6 billion U. S. dollars), the Japan Chain Stores Association said on Monday. The result came from data collected at 7,742 stores run by 57 companies in the country.
The association attributed the fall partly to the impact of the March 11 disasters last year which forced operators to temporary close some stores or cut opening hours in a power-saving campaign.
Japan has been fighting a power shortfall since the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant had led to suspension of reactors.
In addition, bad weather like massive typhoons and radiation fear were also contributors to the fall. Food sales dropped 1.8 percent amid concerns over radiation contamination. The item accounts for about 60 percent of total sales. |
