India's inflation soars 7.23 pct in April

India's inflation rose 7.23 percent in April from a year earlier on account of rise in prices of vegetables, meat, milk and pulses, reported Press Trust of India on Monday.

The inflation rate, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index ( WPI), was higher than 6.89 percent in March but lower than 9.74 percent in April last year.

Vegetables were 60.97 percent costlier in April than a year earlier. In March, the rate of price rise in vegetables was 30.57 percent.

Milk became 15.51 percent more expensive than a year before, while rice and cereals turned 5.68 percent and 5.8 percent costlier respectively. Prices of potato too rose by 53.44 percent.

Besides, eggs, meat and fish prices rose 17.54 percent in April, slightly lower than 17.71 percent in March.

Inflation for the overall food items category was 10.49 percent in April, as against 10.66 percent in March.
