Western Australia's first uranium mine recommended for approval
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-21 15:08

The first uranium mine in Western Australia (WA) is a step closer to reality after it has been recommended for approval by the WA Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), local media reported on Monday.

South Australia-based Toro Energy, one of Australia's largest emerging uranium exploration and development companies, is seeking to develop the mine at Wiluna, about 550 kilometers north of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reports.

Toro's mine is expected to operate for 14 years, with up to two million tones of mineralized ore mined and 1200 tonnes of uranium oxide concentrate expected to be produced each year.

EPA Chairman Paul Vogel said on Monday that the environmental impacts of Toro Energy's proposal had been meticulously examined by the board.

"The EPA recognizes that as the first uranium mine proposed for WA, public interest has been high," Vogel said.

He said the EPA consulted extensively with a number of agencies during its thorough assessment, and considered that the existing regulatory framework provides a comprehensive legislative system for regulating uranium mining and transport.

"My understanding is there will be financial assurances required, there will be monitoring requirements to meet the trigger levels," he said.

"And, if those trigger levels are exceeded, then the Department of Mines and Petroleum will ensure those standards are met over time."

WA Environment Minister Bill Marmion will make a final decision on whether to go ahead with the project.
