EU capable to guarantee eurozone stability: Monti
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-13 07:47

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Tuesday that the European Union (EU) has the capacity to make important decisions to guarantee the eurozone's stability and live up to expectations.

"The EU has realized that important decisions need to be made in order to guarantee the financial stability of the eurozone by all means," Monti told a press conference after meeting with Swiss President and Finance Minister Eveline Widmer Schlumpf in Rome.

The leaders discussed "prospects of the EU in the run-up to the important meeting of the European Council later this month, whose main themes will be financial stabilization and growth," Monti said.

He added that Italy and Switzerland were considering double taxation and information exchange to intensify the fight against tax evasion which was "a priority for the Italian government."

Possible operating solutions would be "fully compatible with the EU discipline, especially in the fields of double taxation and information exchange," Monti said.

According to the internal revenue service, Italian deposits currently hidden in Swiss banks amount to 150 billion euros (187 billion U.S. dollars).

"We are working on development measures, and we will find the necessary resources," Italian Economic Development Minister Corrado Passera was quoted as saying by ANSA news agency on Tuesday.

"Italy has all the resources to overcome this serious crisis," he said.

"We grow by two-digit numbers in the export, and we are the country that loses less in international trade," Passera said, adding that "there are all elements for growth, but we still need to fix many things."

On the same day, Fitch ratings agency managing director Ed Parker said Italy was unlikely to need a bailout, as the eurozone's third largest economy was "much closer to getting to a sustainable macro-economic position."
