Eurozone crisis to last long on structural problems: think tank
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-15 14:08

Euro zone crisis is expected to be patched up over the short term, but the crisis will last long due to structural problems such as lack of political leadership and economic weakness in the region, a local think tank said Friday.

It is highly likely that the euro zone crisis will be patched up over the short run as Greece was expected to form a coalition government after the second round of general elections scheduled for Sunday, according to a report by the Hyundai Research Institute (HRI).

Global policy coordination to solve the euro zone crisis will be discussed in the Group of 20 (G20) summit slated for next Monday, while the European summit that will be held later this month was expected to add growth pact to the new fiscal pact, leading to help patch up the euro zone crisis in the short term, according the report.

From a long-term perspective, however, the crisis will last long due to the remaining destabilizing factors, the think tank said.

The HRI noted that lack of strong political leadership in the region will act as a fundamental destabilizer, saying that euro zone members are against tighter austerity measures insisted upon by Germany, while the Europe's largest economy is against the issue of euro bonds and rapid formation of banking union.

The think tank also warned that the newly launched coalition government in Greece may call for the re-negotiation of the austerity plan, while worsening economic and fiscal conditions in Spain may cause another economic crisis in the euro area.

If the structural problems are not tackled, the euro zone crisis will repeatedly be eased and resumed over the long run, the thank tank said, adding that the lengthening crisis will delay the global economic recovery.
