A renowned South Korean conductor met with music officials from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in Beijing to discuss a joint orchestra performance in Pyongyang, local media reported Monday.

An official from the Ministry of Unification in Seoul, which handles bilateral affairs, confirmed that Chung Myung-whun, the conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, held talks with the DPRK officials in Beijing on Sunday, according to Yonhap news agency.

An official with the Seoul metropolitan orchestra also told Yonhap that Chung met with the officials of the DPRK's music research institute to follow up talks exchanged during Chung's visit to Pyongyang in September last year.

In September last year, Chung, who serves as a UNICEF "goodwill ambassador," traveled to the DPRK, where he reached an agreement with DPRK musicians to push for regular joint performances by the two countries' orchestras.

The concert, if held, will be the first joint performance in the capital of the DPRK since a similar one in 2002.
