Japanese table tennis star Ai Fukuhara on Saturday defeated Kasumi Ishikawa four games to one to win her first singles title in the final of Japan's national championships at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
The doll-faced Fukuhara won the game 11-7, 11-7, 11-7, 3-11, 11-5. She rose to the victory when defending champion Ishikawa's backhand went long.
The popular player, ranked ninth in the world, made her first tournament appearance in 1999 when she was only 11.
Fukuhara was stopped at the semifinals twice in the previous championships. |
