Cyprus targets at least one medal in London Olympics

Cyprus Olympic Committee said on Thursday that Cyprus is targeting at least one medal in the upcoming London Olympics.

In an interview with Xinhua, Cyprus Olympic Committee President Ouranios M. Ioannides said they are ready for the London Olympics.

"The preparation for the Olympics started in 2009. Now we are ready," he said.

Ioannides said during the period of preparation they sent athletes to different international games, not only winning medals but also accumulating experiences for the London Games.

"We are sure we can win at least one medal," Ioannides said.

Cyprus Olympic Committee was established in 1974. Cyprus participated in Los Angleles Olympics in 1980 for the first time after independence in 1960 and since then, Cyprus has never won any medal in the Olympic Games.

"We will have a breakthrough in London Olympics. We are confident," Ioannides said.

Ioannides said 12 Cypriot athletes have been qualified for the London Olympics and they will compete in 6 sports of shooting, tennis, athletics, sailing, gymnastics and cycling.

He added three more athletes are waiting the qualification which will be confirmed by the end of this month. If they are qualified, they will compete in swimming and gymnastics.

Ioannides said among the sports shooting and athletics will be their chances to win medals.
