Spanish housing sales down by 1.17 percent in Q3

Housing sales in Spain decreased by 1.17 percent in the third quarter of 2012 from the same period last year, the Ministry of Public Works said on Wednesday.

A total of 75,642 houses were sold in the July-September period, down from 76,534 for the third quarter of 2011.

Among all, about 32 percent of the houses sold in the third quarter were new establishments, which saw a 6.6 percent decrease from the same period of 2011.

Meanwhile, house purchases by non-Spaniards rose by 18 percent from June to September 2012 in comparison with the same period of 2011. The number of foreigners buying homes in Spain has been increasing for five consecutive quarters.

The new purchases have been mainly registered in the Community of Valencia, Catalonia, and Andalusia.
