Focus of Iran visit is on "possible military dimension": IAEA chief
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-29 10:23

A group of senior officials and experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) left Vienna on Saturday for Iran, to discuss with the Gulf country issues related to its disputed nuclear programme.

The focus of the visit is the "possible military dimension," said the IAEA chief Yukiya Amano in an interview with Xinhua on Friday.

The high-ranking team from the Vienna-based UN nuclear watchdog will start the "activity" in Iran on Sunday and continue until Tuesday, Amano told Xinhua on the sidelines of the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"The main objective is to solve the outstanding, substantial issues, and the emphasis is on the issues with possible military dimension," he said.

Suspicious of Iran's intention of enriching uranium, especially following an IAEA report last November, the United States, the European Union (EU) and some of their allies announced new sanctions against Tehran in recent weeks.

The report alleging Iran had engaged in nuclear bomb-related activities was categorically rejected by Tehran, which called the report "imbalanced, non-professional and politically-motivated."

In answer to questions about some ambiguities over the report, the IAEA chief said, "It (the report) does not say Iran has nuclear weapons. It does not say that Iran has decided to develop nuclear weapons."

"However, the report says that we have the information that indicates that Iran has engaged in activities linked with the development of nuclear explosive devices. Therefore, we have required Iran to clarify these issues," he said.

The mission is in the interest of Iran itself, providing it with an opportunity to defend its claim that its nuclear program is uniquely for peaceful purpose, Amano noted.

"We are determined to do everything possible in a constructive manner. And I hope that Iran respond to us with equally constructive manner," he said.

Asked about the next phase after the mission, Amano said that will be decided after the mission returns.

"Iran nuclear issue has a long history and it's a complicated issue. I do not think one mission can solve all the problems. So we would like to continue this path and solve the problem in the due course."

Last November, the board of the IAEA adopted a resolution on Iran's nuclear program suspected of having military purposes, calling for intensified dialogue to find solutions to unresolved issues.

"We would like to solve the problem on the issues through dialogue and for that puupose Iran needs to tell us everything and we would like to have access to people, site and documents," Amano said, adding,"It is only through these dialogues, that we can solve this problem."

According to a report from Iran's Fars News Agency, the IAEA visit is aimed at holding talks within the framework of the IAEA statute to bolster cooperation between the two sides by resolving ambiguities.

The team has no plan to inspect Iran's nuclear facilities, the report said.
