China's State Council, the country's cabinet, has approved a plan to promote regional cooperation in the Yellow River "golden triangle," according to a government statement on Monday.

The region, covering inland Shanxi, Shaanxi and Henan provinces, is expected to be a new engine for economic growth in less developed central and western China, according to the statement on the government website at www.gov.cn.

Efforts shall be made to improve transportation connectivity in the region to mobilize resources and promote common development, according to the plan.

The provinces are also asked to make joint efforts in tackling environmental pollution and promoting environmental protection, according to the plan.

China expects to build experience in enhancing regional cooperation through development of the triangle area, according to the plan.
