The European Union (EU) on Wednesday imposed tariffs of up to 42.1 percent on solar glass imports from China, which would come into force Thursday.

Chinese manufacturers had been allegedly selling the product, which is used for producing solar panels, in the EU at prices below cost, thus causing "material injury" to EU producers, the European Commission said in its Official Journal.

The provisional levies, resulting from an anti-dumping investigation that the Commission launched in February, would range from 17.1 percent to 42.1 percent, said the Commission.

The decision came months after the EU and China solved their solar panel trade disputes through "an amicable solution" in August.

The duties would be effective for six months, but would be prolonged for five years if the EU's 28 member states make a final ruling by May 27 next year to do so, the Commission said.

EU still views China as rival in PV industry?

China and the European Union reached a settlement on their trade dispute over China-made photovoltaic products in early August - which allows Chinese firms to largely retain their original market shares, Shanghai-based Securities Daily reports.

However, an insider said that the EU has hired nine independent agencies to conduct investigations into China's PV industry, and the results will be used by two large companies supported by European governments - Bosch and Siemens - in mapping out their PV development plan. >>>More

EU to continue anti-subsidy solar probe

The European Commission announced on Wednesday to continue their anti-subsidy investigation on solar panels from China,without taking provisional measures such like imposing punitive duties in June.

"The investigation will continue without provisional measures and the Commission will continue working actively on the case in order to arrive (at) definitive findings that are due at the end of this year," The Commission said in a statement. >>>More

The European Commission on Friday endorsed the amicable solution to the European Union-China solar panels case announced by Commissioner Karel De Gucht last weekend.

EU, China solve solar panel dispute through price undertaking

The European Union (EU) and Chinese solar panel exporters have agreed to end the trade dispute through setting a minimum export price, EU trade commissioner Karel de Gucht said Monday.

Under the deal, producers accounting for about 70 percent of Chinese solar panel exports to the EU have agreed to set a minimum price for them, De Gucht said at a press conference without specifying what the price is. >>>More
