Chinese authorities recalled a record number of cars in 2013, a staggering 5.3 million vehicles. China's quality inspection authority says that the number accounts for more than one third of the total number of cars recalled in the last decade.

The five most recalled brands were: Mitsubishi, BMW, Hyundai, Jeep and Shaolin. And by the number of cars, the five most recalled brands were: Shanghai GM, Shanghai Volkswagen, Faw-Volkswagen, Dongfeng Honda and Changan Suzuki.

Over the last 10 years, China has made more than 700 recalls, taking back 15 million defected cars. 2013's recalled cars were 65 percent more than the previous year.
