China's railway authorities plan to add 403 more trains on Tuesday to guarantee travelers reached their destinations during the Spring Festival, a traditional holiday for family reunions.

Authorities expect 7 million trips to be made on Tuesday, which will be a travel peak since last Friday, the first day of the seven-day holiday.

Since Jan. 16 -- the start of this year's "chunyun", the travel period around Spring Festival -- some 114.3 million journeys have been made by Monday, up 14 million trips or 14 percent on last year.

Every year, millions of Chinese go home for family reunions during chunyun. This year's chunyun started on Jan. 16 and will end on Feb. 24.

After years of fast development, China's railways topped 100,000 kilometers in 2013, of which more than 10,000 kilometers are high-speed.
