Xinjiang police busted a gang involved in telephone fraud and detained 22 suspects, the regional department of public security of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region confirmed Wednesday.

According to the public report, Xinjiang police investigated and arrested 22 suspects and seized 91 bank cards, 10 computers and many SIM cards used for telephone scams in the southern city of Guangzhou, police said.

The perpetrators include 16 males and six females, all around 30 years old.

Founded in 2009, the fraud ring, headed by a woman surnamed Zhao, employed and trained others to use "cooperation in stock investments" as a way to get money from people over the phone.

The group claimed to be able to help clients make profits by introducing them to stocks. Clients were then asked to remit money to bank accounts.

It is a serious case of telephone fraud involving a huge amount of money and leaving victims in 26 provinces or cities across the country, said police.

The case is still under investigation.
