Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-28 10:16

Among the 16,491 respondents from China's 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, over 83 percent admitted that the Internet has changed the characters of them and surrounding peopleaccording to a survey by the Social Investigation Center of China Youth Daily last week.

The Internet has brought vast amounts of information and convenient communication and at the same time it also affects our behaviors, habits and even characters.

The "Internet Addiction Disorder" and "Network Autism" are the most common symptoms among young people. Among the respondents, about 15 percent was born in 1990s, 53 percent was born in 1980s and 24 percent was born in 1970s.

Only less than 47 percent can bear more than one day without the Internet

84 percent of respondents said that many young people around them suffer from the "Internet Addiction Disorder"; nearly 33 percent said that the number of people suffering from the "Internet Addiction Disorder" is "so many" and almost 40 percent admitted that they suffer from the "Internet Addiction Disorder."

According to Tao Ran, director of the Internet Addiction Treatment Center under the Military General Hospital of Beijing PLA, people feel cheerful when they just learned to surf the Internet and the feeling will be gradually strengthened after long-term use of the Internet and finally the feeling of "being happy online and unhappy offline" will be produced. Then, the psychological mechanism of "obsessively surfing the Internet" will be formed. The users always hold a mentality of "Internet making me happy."

Through the survey, 92 percent said that they stay on the Internet every day; about 47 percent said that they can bear more than one day of without the Internet; 22 percent said that they can bear over three days of without the Internet and 32 percent said that most of time they browse the Internet aimlessly.

About 61 percent said that the Internet has weakened the love of family members, friends and lovers.

Liu Dong, who is from Tianjin and just got married, recently complained to her friends that now she has less communication with her husband. Liu said that they had many common topics in the past but now they often sit at the computer after getting home from work and almost do not speak to each other. "Everyone is growing and changing. It is bad for a harmonious conjugal relation if they do not communicate with each other timely to understand the changes," Liu said.

The Internet can weaken the social interaction of people and make them loss enthusiasm of experiencing and participating in the colorful life and thus become more and more lonely. People called the phenomenon "Network Autism."

In the survey, 75 percent said that there are many young people around them suffering from the "Network Autism" and almost 23 percent said that the number is "very many." 34 percent admitted that they suffer from the "Network Autism."

Almost 61 percent said that the Internet has weakened the love of family members, friends and lovers and 39 percent think that the Internet greatly affected their relations with family and friends.

Over 83 percent admitted that the Internet has changed the characters of them and surrounding people. Among them, about 64 percent said excessive surfing on the Internet makes people "get introverted;" 57 percent think that staying on the Internet all day long makes them "more lonely;" 46 percent chose "lack of creativity;" 42 percent chose "get passive" and 35 percent said that the Internet makes them "depressed."

Lei Li, a psychology professor at the Renmin University of China, said that the friendship on the Internet largely is a "weak relation." Online friends come from different places and are difficult to provide timely and effective help with each other. When the demands cannot be met, people will feel lonely and helpless and even produce such negative emotions as depression, anxiety and melancholy. Therefore, people need more effective and close companion relations in real life.

84 percent of respondents think that they should consciously manage their relations with the Internet.

Li Binbin, a student from the Communication University of China, said that more and more people have realized the negative effects of excessive staying on the Internet and began consciously managing their network usage behaviors and habits. For example, Li installed software to control the time spent on the Internet especially the time playing online games. She also posted a slogan called "Do not be a Slave of the Internet!" Their dormitory has made a plan of "No Use the Internet Half a Day a Week."

In the survey, 84 percent think that they should consciously manage their relations with the Internet and less than 84 percent said they should learn to constructively use the Internet.
