Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' upcoming visit to China is of "special significance" and is expected to further strengthen the "excellent" bilateral ties, Greek Foreign Affairs Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Wednesday.

The Greek Premier is due to visit China on May 15-19 upon an invitation from Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. He will head a delegation of 50 Greek ministers and businessmen.

"Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' upcoming trip to China is of special significance," Avramopoulos said during a press briefing in Athens when asked to comment on the visit.

"The visit reaffirms the mutual respect and willingness to build a strategic partnership between the two countries," he told Greek news agency AMNA.

He added that the trip will boost the "already excellent bilateral relations and open a new chapter in the sectors of the economy and investments."

The Greek official added that the visit came in an important moment and "indicates the recognition and confidence in the policies implemented in Greece for the recovery of the Greek economy."
