Exclusive interview with Erlinda F. Basilio, the Philippine Ambassador to China

China and the Philippines share long trade relations that date back to thousands of years. Ever since the establishment of China-Philippine diplomatic relations 37 years ago, exchanges and cooperation have been intensified and expanded to all walks of life bringing about tangible benefits to the two countries and peoples.

The year 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the China-ASEAN Strategic Partnership. The Philippines is poised to become an economic powerhouse in Southeast Asia. How does this play into its economic policy? And In what way will the Philippines enhance its cooperation with China within the framework of the ASEAN?

With these questions, China Economic Net (ce.cn) had an exclusive interview with Erlinda F. Basilio, the Philippine Ambassador to China, on May 14 (Friday) in Beijing.

Ms. Basilio believed that the two-way trade and investment between the two neighboring countries will be significantly intensified and diversified, and their trade complementarity will have a full play and the prospect for China-Philippines cooperation will look up with the efforts made by both countries who are working together to create a healthy economic environment.

The two sides are important trade and economic cooperation partners. Two-way trade has grown steadily, hitting the historic high of US$ 32.2 billion last year. In the first 10 months of 2012, bilateral trade volume has already reached $30 billion, a 15 percent year on year. The number of Chinese mainland tourists traveling to the Philippines has surpassed 215,814 in the first 10 months of 2012.

In retrospect, the China-Philippine relations, though going through ups and downs, generally remained on a sound track, the ambassador said.

Looking ahead, Ms. Basilio hopes both sides would be able to enhance relationship in terms of economic, cultural and people-to-people exchange.

Building on what has been achieved so far. both countries should "make sure the development goals of both countries will be for the mutual benefit of two peoples."
