Altogether 22,200 journeys from China to Cuba were made in 2013, up 18 percent year on year, according to the latest statistics from Cuban embassy in China.

Cuba was approved by Chinese government in 2003 as the first Latin American country to receive Chinese tour groups.

More Chinese visitors chose Cuba for health care tours, where medical treatment services for lung cancer, diabetes and strokes are high-end and renowned, said Frank Pais Oltuski Rodriguez, vice president of marketing in Cuba's Gaviota Tours Group.

China's central bank has authorized China Unionpay to establish businesses in Cuba, and Chinese travelers have been able to withdraw cash in Cuba's banks and ATMs with Unionpay cards since 2013.
