Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong called for efforts to work out a comprehensive, scientific plan to better preserve the Palace Museum on Tuesday.

Liu said the planning should focus on the concepts of environmental protection and energy conservation, as well as the quality and safety of the museum, which is also known as the Forbidden City.

Relevant department officials are urged to work with experts to make scientific decisions and carry out a series of projects, including remolding underground storehouses, restoring cultural relics and rebuilding infrastructure.

During a tour of the Palace Museum, Liu said the palace is a very important carrier of Chinese culture and has witnessed the development of the nation's history.

The protection and exhibition of cultural relics in the museum have improved in recent years, Liu said, adding that more efforts are needed to promote the preservation of cultural heritage and carry forward Chinese tradition.
