China's top legislature on Friday held a symposium to solicit suggestions from lawmakers on its draft work report to be delivered in the upcoming annual session in March.

Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), presided over the Beijing symposium, which was also attended by NPC deputies.

Some deputies suggested that the quality of legislation needs to be improved, as well as the enforceability of laws. Others suggested that the people's concerns over curbing pollution and promoting equality in education be addressed.

Issues concerning rural areas, agriculture, information security and vocational education were also mentioned.

Zhang said the top legislature will study lawmakers' opinions in a serious way and revise its work report. It will also seek out shortcomings in its work and eliminate them.

He added that respecting lawmakers' principal roles, improving their quality and exerting their functions are the basis for better work by the NPC.

The senior official also called for deputies to strengthen their sense of a mission to serve the people, for lawmakers to forge closer contacts with ordinary citizens, and for deputies to better understand the people's situation, reflecting their will and pooling societal wisdom.
