Two people died and at least 18 others were injured in a grenade explosion in a busy area in the Gasabo District of Kigali city, local media reported on Wednesday.
The blast went off at about 6:40 p.m. local time (1640 GMT) Tuesday near a local bar where fresh fruits and vegetables were sold.
The injured were soon sent to hospital.
In a press statement released on Wednesday, the Rwanda National Police (RNP) said, "Some of those admitted" have already been discharged and investigations continue "to identify the authors or the cause of the explosion."
"Rwanda National Police urges the public to continue with their cooperation and share timely information, and report anything suspicious to the nearby police station or concerned authorities," the statement added.
Rwandan Police Spokesperson Theos Badege said, "We have sealed off the area and are carrying out investigation to know if it was thrown by someone, or if it had been planted earlier on. It is just a matter of time before we know the exact circumstances."
In 2010, several grenade attacks killed scores of Kigali residents and wounded others.
Over 30 people have since been arrested in connection with previous blasts and are now on trial. Some have pled guilty on terrorism charges. |
