Libya expects to try Gaddafi son in Libya
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-13 11:27

Libya expects the International Criminal Court to agree that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the highest-profile son of the late leader, be tried in Libya. The justice minister said that on Thursday.

Minister of Justice Ali Humaida Ashour said the ICC has accepted a request by Libyan authorities to try the former leaders son and will make a final decision within weeks.

ICC judges still requested that Libya submit a formal challenge to the ICC and answer questions about his arrest and conditions of detention.

On Tuesday the ICC said it will give Libya until January 23 to provide information including reports on Saifs mental and physical health.

Ashour also said Saif may face the death penalty. Saif al-Islam was captured by a powerful militia from Zintan that still holds him, but Ashour said that he was under the control of the public prosecutor.
