Mali's transition president Dioncounda Traore is scheduled to be sworn in on Wednesday, according to the West African country's National Assembly (parliament).

The former speaker of parliament will have his swearing-in ceremony at 10 a.m. local time at the international conference center in the capital Bamako, the communication of the National Assembly said on Monday.

The ceremony will be presided over by the president of the Supreme Court in Mali in conformation to the constitution adopted on Feb. 25, 1992.

Traore's takeover is seen as a major step to the return of the constitutional order after the March 22 military coup.

Under an agreement between the West African bloc ECOWAS and the military junta, the speaker of parliament would act as transition leader pending an election within months.

Ousted President Amadou Toumani Toure on Saturday rendered his resignation to pave the way for the transition.

Mali has plunged into a political crisis following the coup, with Tuareg rebels sweeping through the northern part in two weeks and ECOWAS slapping sanctions on the landlocked country. The bloc has agreed to lift the punitive measures with the signing of the deal to move out of the crisis in a country once seen as a model democracy in West Africa.
