Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-16 19:32

The Swiss government on Monday confirms the kidnapping of a Swiss woman who had been living in Timbuktu, Mali.

The Swiss government says the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), the Federal Office of Police (FEDPOL) and the intelligence service have started work to resolve the case.

The FDFA is getting in touch with the family of the kidnapping victim. The SDC Coordination Office in Bamako and the Swiss embassy in Dakar, which is also responsible for Mali, are in touch with the local authorities.

Since December 1, 2009, the FDFA has alerted against travelling to Mali due to higher risk of kidnapping.

Amid deteriorating security situation following the military coup and the advance of the rebels, the Swiss foreign ministry had advised the Swiss nationals living in Mali to leave the country.
