Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court on Thursday ruled unconstitutional the Political Isolation Law, thus paving the way for ex-premier Ahmed Shafiq to contest the run- off of the presidential vote, state-run Nile TV reported.

The law, which was passed by the People's Assembly in April and later approved by the ruling military council, prevents former senior officials, who served the former regime in the last ten years, from exercising political rights.

Shafiq, who was the last prime minister under ex-president Hosni Mubarak, will face Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohamed Morsi in the run-off of the presidential election on Saturday and Sunday. But protesters have recently been urging to ban him from running in the vote.

Meanwhile, the same court on Thursday ruled unconstitutional some articles related to the parliament election law, which allow party members to compete for independents seats.

It was unconstitutional to allow party members to compete as independent candidates for individual seats in the lower house, the official MENA news agency quoted the court as saying.

Including the names of party members vying for individual seats into the final list of party candidates was unconstitutional, the court added.

It is unclear whether only one-third of the seats needs to be re-elected or the whole parliament would be dissolved after the court's ruling.

The parliamentary law had originally allocated two thirds of the seats to parties and one third to independents. But after many political powers threatened to boycott the polls, the law was revised to allow party candidates to compete all seats.
