UN hopes for peaceful, inclusive election in Egypt
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-16 09:38

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Friday expressed his hope for a successful presidential election in Egypt.

"The secretary-general strongly hopes that the final round of the presidential elections will proceed in a peaceful and inclusive atmosphere," said a UN statement. "He underscores the United Nations strong support for Egypt's transition to fully meet the legitimate expectations of the Egyptian people."

Egyptians will go to the polls on June 16 to vote for a new president in a runoff election, choosing from two remaining candidates -- Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq.

According to the statement, Ban is closely following the elections, and believes they are a very important part of Egypt's movement towards greater democracy.

"He notes the heightened debate and concerns among Egyptians about the implications of yesterday's decision of the Supreme Constitutional Court regarding the parliamentary electoral law," said the statement.

The court ruled on June 14 that the lower house of the Egyptian parliament was void and unconstitutional.
