Egypt's Administrative Court decided on Tuesday to suspend a justice ministry decision to grant the military power to arrest civilians.
The decision came after an appeal filed by political activists, who considered it a clear violation of the criminal law and the military judiciary law.
On June 13, Justice Minister Adel Abdel Hamid issued a decision which allows military police and intelligence to arrest non-military offenders in crimes in the penal code.
The decree aimed to help police maintain law and order, and was expected to be in force until the implementation of the new constitution.
But it sparked an outcry among activists, who have been protesting against the decree and calling for the cancellation of it. |
