Two Malian parties call for organization of extraordinary congress of Malian people
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-26 15:51

The United Front to Safeguard Democracy and the Republic (FDR) and the Alliance of Patriotic Democrats for Ending the Crisis (ADPS), on Saturday proposed the organization of an extraordinary congress of the Malian people to end the crisis in the country.

According to officials of the two political formations which are opposed to the military junta, "the said congress will be organized by the National Commission for Preparatory Reflection and will be presided over by the Transition President, Dioncounda Traore."

The proposal was made through a memorandum that was drafted at the end of meetings held on June 13, 16 and 17 between FDR and ADPS which are respectively led by Siaka Diakite and Soumana Sako.

The officials of these two political parties and associations regretted that two months since the formation of the government led by Cheick Modibo Diarra, no concrete action has been taken concerning the northern parts of the country which are occupied by Islamism groups.

The FDR and the ADPS reiterated their support for the decision to extend the term of parliament until the holding of future legislative elections, but urged the transition president to form the Republican Council which is comprised of representatives from the political class and the civil society.

In their memorandum, the two parties called for the formation of an "inclusive government which is more representative" so that it can resolve the many challenges that the country is confronted with.
