The United Arab Emirates' (UAE) largest sheikhdom Abu Dhabi witnessed Thursday the highest temperature in 2012 so far, as the thermometer in the town of Sweihan reached 49.9 degrees Celsius, local news agency WAM reported.
By law, the UAE government must grant its state employees a day- off in case the thermometer hits 50 degrees Celsius.
While humidity declined slightly, temperatures rose sharply throughout the UAE Thursday. The sudden jump in heat occurred one week before the Islamic month of Ramadan starts, when Muslims are obliged to fast from dusk to dawn. |
