Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-19 09:07

Three European aid workers were freed by a terrorist group in Mali after being held hostage there for nine months, Spanish media reported on Wednesday.

Spanish aid workers Ainhoa Fernandez de Rincon and Enric Gonyalons were released along with Italian aid worker Rosella Urru. A Spanish plane would fly to the area in the coming hours to bring them back home.

The three aid workers were kidnapped on October 22, 2011 by the al Qaeda-linked group Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa.

Two more Spanish aid workers, Montserrat Serra and Blanca Thiebaut both from Medecins Sans Frontiers, now remain kidnapped in Africa. The two were kidnapped in Kenya in October 2011.
