Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-24 09:50

The number of hospitalized people who were poisoned after drinking polluted water in Sansafat village in Egypt's Menoufia governorate has reached 175, the Egyptian Health Ministry said Thursday.

Among the 175 people, 41 were admitted Thursday, said head of the Preventive Medicine Sector of the Health Ministry Amr Qandil, asserting that none of them were in fatal condition.

The number of recorded cases of those who suffered from poisoning after drinking polluted water since the outbreak on Sunday, the first day of Eid al-Fitr, has so far reached 4,179, official news agency MENA reported Thursday.

Egyptian Health Minister Mohamed Moustafa ordered to conduct tests on the water of the affected village every two hours and to close all the private or unlicensed water stations.

Any side found guilty in this case will be punished by the law, Moustafa was quoted as saying.

The minister also visited the hospital where victims are undergoing medical treatment. Angry families of the victims showed him a bottle of muddy water.

According to Amr Qandil, primary analysis showed that the polluted water had not been purified with chlorine and 90 percent of the poisoned people got their water from authorized governmental sources. The final results will be announced on Saturday or Sunday.

For his part, the presidency's spokesman Yasser Ali said a governmental team has been formed to manage the crisis of polluted water in Menoufia governorate.

The deterioration of infrastructure was the reason behind the crisis, said Ali, adding that some water networks were intermixed with sewage networks in Menoufia.
