Ghana police unveil security measures ahead of election
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-06 14:02

A senior Ghanaian police officer on Friday announced a comprehensive security arrangement aimed at ensuring a peaceful general election in December.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Patrick Timbilla, Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, made the announcement when he launched a 17-member election security task force to handle security issues before, during and after the election.

Timbilla said security agencies had identified over 251 election flash points in Accra, where security would be beefed up to maintain peace and order.

"We are going to have patrol teams very close to these hot spots so that in time of need they can quickly go round to address it and maintain law and order," he said.

Police would also position reserves at vantage points to assist the patrol teams that would respond to any public disorder, he said.

"The police will be fully engaged with all aspects of security concerns. It will be transparent and impartial in its duties to the nation," Timbilla said.

Ghanaians will go to the polls on December 7 to elect a president and Members of Parliament (MPs), the sixth successive election since 1992.

The poll is expected to be a straight fight between the two main political parties in Ghana, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
