Egyptian protesters urge dissolving Constitutional Assembly
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-20 06:18

Thousands of Egyptians flocked to central Cairo's Tahrir Square after Friday's prayer to protest against "the Muslim Brotherhood (MB)'s domination in the constitution-drafting Constitutional Assembly (CA)."

The protesters surrounded the gates of the Shura Council (upper house of the parliament), asking for dissolving the assembly, chanting "Down, down with rule by the guide," in reference to MB leader Mohamed Badie.

"The CA is dominated by the Islamists, which diminishes the chance of drafting a constitution representing all sectors of the Egyptian society," Nouran Adel, a leading member in the Revolutionary Youth Coalition, told Xinhua.

"We also reject some articles in the constitution's first draft announced last week related to the judiciary and the presidency powers," she added.

Some demonstrators also called for the retrial of the perpetrators involved in killing protesters in the unrest last year.

Prominent political groups like April 6 movement, Revolutionary Youth Coalition, Free Egyptian Party, al-Dostour party and many others took part in the demonstrations, demanding the MB to stop what they believe are endeavors to dominate decision-making in Egypt.

A week earlier, a protest in Tahrir Square turned into violent clashes, leaving nearly 150 people injured. The pro-MB protesters demanded the retrial of senior officials of the government of former President Hosni Mubarak, and anti-MB liberals called for a constitution that represents all Egyptians.

Dozens of lawyers and rights centers had filed lawsuits for dismantling the CA. Egypt's Administrative Court has postponed three times ruling on whether to annul the panel, and the next hearing is set to be held on Oct. 23.
