Mali's national consultations postponed to later date
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-23 17:42

Mali's national consultations scheduled on Nov. 26-28 have been postponed until further notice, a source said on Thursday after a meeting between the country's interim president Dioncounda Traore and the national organizing committee.

According to the source, the postponement was necessary in order to allow all the country's civil society as well as all republican and democratic forces to be involved.

The members of the national organizing committee said that the president had indicated that it was not possible to have the national consultations on the chosen dates.

Political groups such as the United Front for Safeguarding Democracy and the Republic (RDR) and the Alliance of Patriotic Democrats for ending the crisis (APDS) had indicated that they would not take part in the national talks.

The FDR had deplored the partisan composition of the organizing committee which is headed by the director from the prime minister's office.

The APDS on its part had complained about the lack of a clear agenda for the talks, lack of proper representation of all Malians and the non-inclusiveness of the talks. In short, APDS noted that the talks were meant to serve as a forum for listening to the residents of Bamako (the Malian capital) and not all the Malian people.

ADPS insisted that it will not take part in any national consultations when some of the country's regions in the north had not yet been liberated.

During a press conference held on Thursday, Me Mountaga Tall who is the head of the Convergence to Save Mali (CSM) that is neither for or against the junta, called for the postponement of the national talks.

"If the national talks take place, we shall participate. But our desire is to see them postponed to allow all Malians to be represented at the talks," Me Tall said when he addressed the media in Bamako together with his colleagues.
