Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore on Friday expressed condolences to countries and families affected by the crash of flight AH-5017 of Air Algeria, an official source has said.

At the same time, Compaore declared a two-day national mourning period.

"At this time of mourning and sadness, I want to express, on behalf of Burkina Faso people and myself, my sympathy and solidarity with families of the dead and with nations whose men and women were on board flight AH-5017," the statement from the presidency said.

It added that the accident which occurred on July 24 was a big loss not only to Burkina Faso people, but also to friendly countries.

Compaore hailed the prompt reaction of Burkina Faso security forces as well as the contribution of the international community in rapid identification of the crash site.

On Friday, Compaore visited the crash site in the Malian locality of Gossi, situated about 50 km from Burkina Faso border.

After the visit, the President committed to support investigators to determine the causes of the accident, even though at the moment it is believed poor weather conditions may have led to the crash.
