Zambian President Edgar Lungu felt fatigue and had traces of malaria, as doctors advised him to take enough rest, said the presidential office.

Earlier on Sunday, the president felt under the weather when he attended the commemoration of the International Women's Day at the National Heroes Stadium.

An initial examination by Lungu's medical team indicated he was suffering high level of fatigue and also had traces of malaria.

The Zambian leader was then taken to the Maina Soko Military Hospital for comprehensive tests, where he was told to take some rest and was treated for malaria.

"I am feeling much better and I have been told I have high levels of fatigue and should take some rest. There is nothing to worry about," Lungu said in a statement.

A picture posted on the presidential office's Facebook page showed Lungu sat on the lounge of the hospital, smiling and accompanied by his wife.

The 59-year-old Lungu won the presidential election in January 2015 after President Michael Sata's death left the post vacant.
