U.S. supports political solution to unrest in Syria: White House
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-31 16:31

The White House said on Monday that the United States supports a political solution that stops the violence in Syria.

White House spokesman Jay Carney made the comment in response to a question about Syrian government's willingness to participate in Moscow-mediated talks to resolve the crisis facing the Arab nation.

He said, "Well, we don't have details at this point on that meeting. But in general we support efforts to reach a political solution that stops the violence in Syria."

"We're intensely discussing with the Russians the real deterioration on the ground in Syria and the very disturbing rise in violence there," he said at a regular news briefing.

"We're discussing with the Russians and other partners how best to use all the levers at the command of the international community and the United Nations to press the Syrian government to stop its appalling and ultimately ineffective and harmful repression."

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said on Monday that his veto-wielding country would not back the latest Western- Arab draft resolution on Syria, as the U.S. and other Western countries are pressing the UN Security Council for a resolution supporting an Arab League call for Syrian President Bashar al- Assad to cede power.

However, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the Syrian authorities have responded positively to Russia's call for talks in Moscow, and called on the Syrian opposition to join the talks by "putting the interests of the Syrian people above all other concerns."

Damascus has rejected a new plan suggested last week by the Arab League, calling it "blatant interference" in Syria's internal affairs, as the plan urged al-Assad to delegate power to his first vice president and envisioned the formation of a national unity government within two months.

"Assad's fall is inevitable," Carney said. "And so, as governments make decisions about where they stand on this issue and what further steps need to be taken with regards to the brutality of the Assad regime, it's important to calculate into your considerations the fact that he will go. The regime has lost control of the country and will eventually fall."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday denounced the growing violence in Syria, saying she would go to New York the next day to call on the Security Council to act.
