Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-31 16:31

Mexico's ambassador to Venezuela Carlos Pujalte and his wife were freed early Monday, hours after they had been kidnapped in Caracas, a spokesman of the Mexican embassy said.

The ambassador, 58, and his wife Paloma Ojeda were released in their vehicle BMW in Chapellin, a neighborhood in eastern Caracas, following a rescue operation coordinated by officials from the Penal and Criminal Investigation Group (CICPC), the National Guard (GN) and the National Bolivarian Police (PNB).

Mexican embassy spokesman Fernando Gondini said both the ambassador and his wife were fine and an investigation was now underway.

The Mexican diplomat and his wife were kidnapped Sunday night when they returned home in Valle Arriba, an exclusive neighborhood in northeastern Caracas and 3 kilometers from the embassy, reports said. The authorities quickly responded with a rescue operation, forcing the kidnappers to release the couple after several hours.
