Echoing the call from Washington, Thomas de Maiziere, German Defense Minister, said that Germany and Europe would take responsibility for 'their own security and their immediate neighborhood and also beyond", after decades of benefiting from the United States' solidarity with the continent.

"Europe should not view the American shift of strategic focus toward Asia as an opportunity," he said.

In her Munich speech, Clinton invited Europe to embrace the new "Asia-Pacific century" together with Washington. "We need to reach out together to regions already playing a growing role in world affairs.. America and Europe need a robust dialogue about the opportunities that lie ahead in the Pacific-Asia region," she said.

However, observers said that as the cloud of debt crisis and fragile growth has been hovering over the two allies, repairing broken economic engines and regaining robustness keeps high on the agenda and acts as a precondition for realizing new strategy and enlarging influence in Asian-Pacific region.

"Failure to restore the health of American's and Europe's economies will undermine the capacity to secure their interests in a profoundly changing world," said Theo Sommer, executive editor of newspaper the Atlantic times.

"Our economic strength lies at the core of everything we are able to do to advance our values, to protect our interest, to create the security architecture that will sustain stability, going forward," Clinton stressed.

She suggest that the two sides map out a common agenda for economic recovery, trade and invest more with each other and with the rest of the world and make sure their security system smart and efficient.
