The United States on Tuesday voiced support for a daily brief ceasefire in Syria to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Noting Washington is "very concerned" about the humanitarian situation in Syria, White House spokesman Jay Carney said: "We support calls for ceasefires to allow for the provision of humanitarian supplies to Syrians who desperately need it."

"The fact is the reprehensible actions taken by the Assad regime, the brutal violence perpetrated by the Syrian leader against his own people has led us to this situation where basic supplies, humanitarian supplies, are very scarce and therefore action needs to be taken," he told reporters at a regular news briefing.

"So we would certainly support the calls for those kinds of ceasefires," he said.

The call for a daily truce came from the International Committee of the Red Cross earlier Tuesday, which demanded a two- hour lull at least for the delivery of aid and the evacuation of the wounded and the sick.

Carney reiterated that Washington still believes in a political solution for Syria, saying "We don't want to take actions that would contribute to the further militarization of Syria, because that could take the country down a dangerous path."

He warned of additional measures if the international community should wait too long before Syrian President Bashar al-Assad steps aside for a peaceful and democratic transition.
