8 taxi drivers killed in northeastern Mexico
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-11 16:46

A group of gunmen on Tuesday killed eight drivers in northeastern Mexico's Nuevo Leon state, local authorities announced in a report.

According to the preliminary report, a group of gunmen arrived at the taxi station in Verde Basin of Guadalupe and killed five men, leaving one seriously injured, who was later transferred to the Red Cross in Nuevo Leon state.

Just a few minutes later, the suspects went to the town of Lomas de San Roque, killing three taxi drivers and leaving two others injured, including one minor who was only 8.

The bodies of the eight people were taken to the amphitheatre of the Nuevo Leon University Hospital, waiting for identification from their relatives and local police.

Nuevo Leon is one of the states most affected by the violence generated by criminal organizations in Mexico. Just a month ago, five drivers were executed at another station in Solidarity Town, north of the state capital Monterrey.

Taxi drivers in Nuevo Leon have been frequently targeted by drug cartels that are fighting for the place (especially the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas), since many of them are accused of working as informants for organized crime gangs.

Mexico is experiencing an escalation of violence as drug cartels fight each other and with the military, leaving more than 47,000 killed in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon launched the "war against organized crimes" in 2006.
