Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-23 11:01

At least two people were killed in Tuesday's 7.4-magnitude earthquake in southern Mexico, a local official said Thursday.

One of the victims was crushed to death by a falling wall while the other died of complications from a heart attack, Salvador Cruz Castro, mayor of Cuajinicuilapa, Guerrero state, said at a meeting with state and federal government officials.

The earthquake also severely damaged 500 houses and partially damaged 1,000 others, and rebuilding these houses requires government support, he said.

It was the first report of deaths from the earthquake, with its epicenter in Ometepec, Guerrero state and impacts felt in central and southern Mexico.

The quake was the strongest in the country since the 1985 when an 8.1-magnitudes tremor killed more than 10,000 people.

Mexico has suffered several aftershocks since Tuesday, which caused no major damage.
