US: DPRK still bound by relevant UN resolutions
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-18 07:10

The United States said on Tuesday that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was still bound by the two relevant UN Security Council resolutions which prohibit it from conducting any nuclear tests.

"We've been very clear, especially the presidential statements that was passed by the UN Security Council yesterday, that North Korea needs to comply with Security Council Resolution 1718 and 1874," said State Department spokesman Mark Toner.

"And that includes abandoning all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs, as well as no more nuclear tests or abstaining from any nuclear tests," he told reporters at a briefing.

Toner warned that the UN Security Council "was determined to take action" if the DPRK conducts any future launch or nuclear test.

Toner's remarks came after the DPRK said earlier the day that it now wasn't obliged to a major deal with the United States. Pyongyang also rejected the latest UN Security Council presidential statement condemning its satellite launch.

In the agreement signed on Feb. 29, the DPRK agreed to impose a moratorium on nuclear tests and long-range missile launches and allow international nuclear inspectors to return to the country. In return, the United States agreed to provide the country with 240,000 tons of food aid.

Previously on Friday, the United States had already said that it would not go forward with the food aid deal with the DPRK, following Pyongyang's satellite launch.
