U.S. politician's corruption case declared mistrial
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-01 09:58

A U.S. jury on Thursday acquitted former U.S. presidential hopeful John Edwards on one of six counts of political corruption charges, but a mistrial was declared on other charges as the jury failed to reach agreement.

According to local WRAL-TV, the jury in a federal court in Greensboro, North Carolina, has found Edwards not guilty of one charge of illegally using campaign donations to hide his pregnant mistress. The judge declared a mistrial on five other counts after a jury failed to reach agreement on the complicated allegations of campaign finance violations.

In a statement to the press, Edwards thanks jurors for deliberating thoughtfully, and admitted he did a lot of wrong things. It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors would retry Edwards on the other counts.

Edwards' trial began in April, with prosecutors asserting that Edwards knew that nearly 1 million dollars from two wealthy donors were illegal campaign contributions and not aid from friends trying to help him hide an affair from his wife, the late Elizabeth Edwards.

Edwards was indicted last year on six federal counts of campaign finance law violations. The 58-year-old former senator from North Carolina faces up to 30 years in prison and 1.5 million dollars in fines, if convicted on all six counts.

The charges arise from hundreds of thousands of dollars that two prominent campaign donors gave to videographer Rielle Hunter, who had an affair and a child with Edwards.

According to the indictment, during the 2008 presidential race, Edwards accepted campaign contributions in excess of lawful limits to protect and advance his candidacy from disclosure of an ongoing extramarital affair with Hunter and her resulting pregnancy.
