Mexico's leftist presidential candidate demands vote recount
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-04 11:10

A leftist Mexican presidential candidate, who finished second in Sunday's presidential vote, announced Tuesday that he had asked the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) to recount the ballots.

"For the sake of democracy, for the good of the country, all votes should be counted to avoid doubt," said Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who represented the leftist coalition, at a press conference.

Obrador's campaign manager Ricardo Monreal said they found "some sort of inconsistencies" in 113,855 polling stations out of the almost 143,000 installed on Sunday, and had delivered a document to the electoral body with a list of those boxes.

Monreal said the request to recount all the votes was presented Tuesday to the IFE, adding that the request was within the legal framework.

He said the IFE would hold a special meeting Wednesday to discuss the proposal.

"Rapid count" results released Sunday evening by the IFE showed that Enrique Pena Nieto, candidate of the once-ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and a former governor of Mexico State, had won the election with a comfortable margin of six percentage points over Obrador.

President Felipe Calderon congratulated Nieto shortly afterwards, while two other presidential candidates conceded defeat in televised addresses.

However, Obrador claimed that Nieto and the PRI had acted in a "completely immoral" way during the election. He charged that the PRI had bought "millions of votes."
