Backgrounder: Latest winners of Nobel Prize in Economics

The 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics went to two U.S. economists on Monday. The following were winners of the award since 2002:

2012: Alvin E. Roth and Lloyd S. Shapley (U.S.);

2011: Christopher A. Sims and Thomas J. Sargent (U.S.);

2010: Peter Diamond and Dale Mortensen (U.S.), Christopher Pissarides (Cyprus and Britain);

2009: Elinor Ostrom and Oliver E. Williamson (U.S.);

2008: Paul Krugman (U.S.);

2007: Leonid Hurwicz, Eric S. Maskin and Roger B. Myerson (U.S.);

2006: Edmund S. Phelps (U.S.);

2005: Thomas C. Schelling (U.S.), Robert J. Aumann (U.S.-Israel);

2004: Finn Kydland (Norway), Edward Prescott (U.S.);

2003: Robert F. Engle (U.S.), Clive W.J. Granger (Britain);

2002: Daniel Kahneman (Israel-U.S.) and Vernon L. Smith (U.S.).
